Hakka interpretes attached to the Court, the suit was adjourned as it was arranged that the services of the Hakka Interpreter at the Police Court might be obtained.
Upon the application of the Plaintiffs' Solicitors, Messrs Stephens and Holmes, the services of the Hakka Interpreter at the Police Court have been refused, on the ground that there is only one such Interpreter attached to that Court, and that there are twelve Magistrate's Courts having been promoted; his services cannot be dispensed with, and upon the further ground that there is always difficulty in obtaining the fees for the Interpreter's services at the Supreme Court.
The suit therefore cannot be proceeded with, to the great injury and inconvenience of the parties until such time as the Hakka Interpreter at the Police Court can be induced to attend.
We would take this opportunity of bringing to your notice that this is only one of the numerous instances in which difficulty and delay have been experienced in the proceedings at the Supreme Court, (both in Court, at Chambers, and upon filing Affidavits and Declarations at the Registrar's Office), owing to the want of the presence of a Hakka Interpreter,
and we have no hesitation in respectfully expressing our opinion that this difficulty and delay will never cease until an Interpreter in Hakka is attached to the Supreme Court.
